Rugby betting in South Africa
Rugby scores in larger numbers than soccer, so the handicap and the points total do more work than a simple win bet. The competition still has to be the one you meant.
South African rugby on a betting coupon falls into three piles that should not be mixed up. The Currie Cup is the domestic provincial competition. The United Rugby Championship is the cross-border league that includes the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers. Springbok matches sit in the Rugby Championship and in other Tests. A price on a franchise in September is not a price on a Springbok Test in the same month.
Match winner
The match-winner market pays on the side that wins the match under the rules of that competition, including extra time if that competition uses it and the market says so. Rugby can draw in competitions that allow a draw. Check whether the draw is a priced outcome or whether the market is two-way. A two-way market that voids on a draw is a different contract from a three-way market that loses on a draw.
Handicap
Because a converted try is worth seven points and a penalty is worth three, the margin between two sides moves in jumps. Handicap lines are often several points wide.
A -7.5 handicap means that side must win by eight points or more. A win by seven, a converted try exactly, loses a -7.5 bet. A +7.5 bet on the other side wins if that side loses by seven or fewer, or if they win.
Read the half as well as the number. Some coupons split the handicap into the first half and the match. A first-half line is judged at half-time only.
Winning margin and totals
Winning-margin bands group the result: win by 1 to 12, win by 13 or more, and so on. The bands are the bookmaker’s, and they differ by match. Read the band on that coupon. Do not assume it matches another match.
Points totals work like soccer goal totals. Over 42.5 match points wins if both teams’ scores add up to 43 or more. Under 42.5 wins on 42 or fewer. The total does not care who scored them. Weather, a slow pitch and a referee who penalties often are all reasons the total might be the market you understand better than the winner. They are reasons to look, not a formula.
Team news that changes a rugby price
In rugby the absence of a starting fly-half, a first-choice lock or a full front row changes how a side scores and how it defends a lead. Look at the named team, not the club badge. International windows also thin out the URC and Currie Cup squads when players are on Springbok duty. A provincial price in that week is a price on the squad that is actually available.
The sign-up terms matter if you are betting with the R25 credit. Hollywoodbets names To Kick-Off First as a market you may not bet on both ways with the bonus. First-try-scorer and anytime-try-scorer markets are also easy to mix up: the first requires that player to score the opening try, the second requires only that they score at some point. The bet types page keeps those distinctions in one place.
A simple order of checks
- Confirm the competition and the venue.
- Confirm whether the market includes extra time.
- If it is a handicap, read the points and the sign out loud.
- Check the odds format against the 5/10 minimum if the stake is sign-up credit.
- Stake only what you decided beforehand.
For the account steps, use the registration guide. Nothing on this page is a suggested bet.
Questions
Which South African teams play in the United Rugby Championship?
The Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers play in the United Rugby Championship. The Currie Cup is the domestic provincial competition. Springbok Tests are a separate set of fixtures.
Why is the handicap used so often in rugby?
Matches are often decided by more than one score. A handicap asks whether a side wins by more than a set number of points, which is a different question from who wins.
Can the sign-up credit be used on who kicks off?
Hollywoodbets' terms say the bonus cannot be used on both markets in the same event. They name To Kick-Off First as one of the examples.
