Horse racing betting in South Africa
A racing bet is win, place or each-way, judged on the official result and the place terms printed for that race. The Hollywoodbets Durban July is a race meeting, not a bonus.
Hollywoodbets has a large racing business, in retail and online, and its name is on South Africa’s biggest race. Race Coast, which runs the meeting, records 2026 as the sixth year of Hollywoodbets’ sponsorship of the Durban July. That sponsorship is not a betting offer. A bet on the race is still a win, place or each-way bet at the price on the coupon.
Win
A win bet pays only if your horse wins the race. Second pays nothing. The price is the win price. A R20 win bet at a European decimal of 6.00 returns R120 if the horse wins, which is R100 profit plus the stake.
Place
A place bet pays if the horse finishes in the places the bookmaker is paying for that race. It does not need to win. The place price is shorter than the win price, because more horses can succeed. If the coupon does not offer a standalone place bet, the place part of an each-way bet is the route.
Each-way
Each-way splits your money in half, notionally, into a win bet and a place bet. You pay both.
Example, using made-up terms so the sum is clear. These are not today’s July terms.
- Stake: R10 each way, so R20 goes out of the account.
- Win price: 8.00 in European decimals, which is 7/1 fractional.
- Place terms printed on this imaginary race: 1/5 of the win odds, for three places.
If the horse wins, both parts win. The win part returns R10 x 8.00 = R80. The place part uses one fifth of the fractional win odds. Fractional 7/1 divided by 5 is 7/5, which is a European place price of 2.40. The place part returns R10 x 2.40 = R24. Total return is R104, from a R20 outlay.
If the horse finishes third, and third is being paid, only the place part wins. You get the R24 back and the win stake loses. Net, you are R4 up on the R20 you paid. If the horse finishes fourth in a race paying three places, both parts lose and the R20 is lost.
Change the fraction or the number of places and the sum changes. That is why the line of small print on the race matters more than a rule of thumb. A big field can pay more places than a five-horse race. Read the terms Hollywoodbets shows for that race before you press the button.
What to read on the racecard
The card tells you the distance, the going if it is declared, the draw, the weight the horse carries, the jockey and the trainer. A wide draw on a tight turf track can matter. It does not matter by a fixed number of lengths that anyone on this site can honestly quote for every course. Use the card as the list of facts, then decide if you know enough. If you do not, the honest outcome is no bet.
Also check the race time and the venue. Turffontein, Greyville and Kenilworth are different tracks. A horse’s last run on one surface is not automatically evidence about another.
Exotic bets
Forecasts, exactas, trifectas and quartets ask you to name horses in finishing order, or in the places, depending on the pool or the fixed-odds version. They are harder than a win bet and the stake can be multiplied by the number of combinations. If the slip shows a total bigger than the amount you typed, you have bought more than one combination. Stop and read the total.
The sign-up credit on racing
The sign-up terms do not publish a separate racing bonus. If the R25 is used on a race, it still has to be wagered within 24 hours of account activation at odds of 5/10 (0.5 decimal) or greater, and it cannot be used on both sides of the same event. A very short-priced favourite can sit under that minimum. Check the odds conversion and the offer terms before you use the credit on a race.

Questions
What is an each-way bet on a horse?
It is two equal stakes: one for the horse to win, and one for the horse to place. A R20 each-way bet costs R40. The place part pays a fraction of the win odds if the horse finishes in the places that race is paying.
What is the Hollywoodbets Durban July?
It is South Africa's major winter handicap, promoted under that name. Race Coast records 2026 as the sixth year of Hollywoodbets' sponsorship of the race.
Do place terms stay the same for every race?
No. The fraction of the odds, and how many places are paid, depend on the race and on the terms Hollywoodbets prints for it. Read them on that race.
